Yellow Science

It's an editorial from the Wall Street Journal.

Admittedly if a friend of mine passed me the journal I'd probably give them a funny look, but the first few paragraphs about this one are worth sampling. I'm not sharing it because agree with everything the guy has to say, but more his point: people are using small things to manipulate large things. It ties in with the Michael Crichton interview I posted a few weeks ago. Don't just read headlines, people! We gotta look deeper and ask serious questions because people are using soundbytes to manipulate your opinions.

The Big Hill: Prepping for the 5k

This is the view from the Big Hill I talked about on the RIOT this morning. The picture is not as impressive as the actual view. Seriously.

RadioU 5K: Training Update...

Time is ticking my friends! The RadioU 5k is less than three weeks away. Translation: get off your booty and get moving!

Today was tough. I just checked the temperature: 92 degrees. Honestly, I think it has to be hotter than that. It was CRAZY hot out there. When I hit the 3 mile mark a voice in my head said: "I don't think I've been this hot in my entire life." Of course, this isn't true. I just haven't been this hot since last summer, but there was no arguing with that voice. It was the kind of hot where you start to get cold and then realize you had better take a break because you are one step from lapping up the water at your feet to only discover it is sand.

After running in the heat I began seeing strange visions...

I knew today was going to be hot so I had to make a choice: run in the woods or run on the standard running trail. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. In the woods, it is cooler but there is little to no breeze and it is more humid. In the sun, you get more breeze and it is less humid but you also have to face the radiant heat from the blacktop which is AWFUL. I opted for the woods today... which sounded great, but as I said it was *HOT*. Super hot. Mind altering hot.

I had to take a couple of walk breaks, but I'm blaming the heat. I hit a 4 miler last week and had a very solid run... and even took 90 seconds off my earlier posted time. Again, I'm blaming variations in temperature for all this not some great difference in athletic ability.

Anyone else training? Hello? (echo, echo....)

Football Skillz: Roy Hall!!!

Roy Hall was here... and we didn't even take a picture. Why didn't we do that? I have no idea...

I thought about using stills from the security camera... but instead I grabbed this stock image with a GIS.
He was an awesome guy! If you're eligible, go to his camp! The info is here!

Michael Crichton: You NEED to read this.

This is a recent interview with author Michael Crichton that absolutely DECIMATES the media... with truth. The insight that he offers in these few paragraphs is something that you need to read, digest, and apply. Be warned, though. He's asking you to think and I realize that is a very unpopular pass time.

RadioU: The Theme and the 5k...

Kevin just e-mailed in his latest PS3 theme:

Sweet! If you've got anything like this, e-mail it in! We'd love to see it. If you look closely you can see that Kevin recently downloaded the Haze demo. I'll bet he's glad he got the demo and didn't waste his money on the game...

It was my intention last week to start a twice a week feature here on the blog about the RadioU 5k and how my training was going for it. Obviously, this didn't happen, but I'm going to start writing about it as of NOW!

We've given you guys stacks of online resources for training schedules. I hope you're using them. Me? I haven't adopted an official training schedule (which I need to) but my general rule of thumb is that I'm running 4-5 times a week to get ready. How is the week shaping up so far? Yesterday I got in 2 miles which is LAME. It was supposed to be 4 but due to interference and a technical difficulty (long story) it was cut in half. Today I got out and managed the 4 miles I had been planning. It took around 41 minutes which is not a great pace, but holy crap... what a run! It felt like I was fighting for my breath the entire time I was running. The experience was intensely miserable. I'm not sure whether it was the 85 degrees or the pollen in the air. Whichever it was (or a potential third option: I'm just not in great shape), I'm glad its over. Theres a whole lotta runnin' to do before the 5k.

E-mail your progress in and tell your friends! The 5k is coming up Friday, June 27!
